A Clever Viral Marketing Technique: “Fresh Balls”

January 4th, 2010

How would you like people to email your website link to everybody they know — for your site to go viral, as they say.

Think about it: Why do people forward links, pictures, videos, to their friends? How can you create a website or a marketing campaign that would lead people to hit the forward button? Jokes and sex are obvious examples. Check out the internet store link below. This link, with a clever video, has been popping up in inboxes:

http://freshballs.com/

Now, keep in mind: this is only one part of a campaign. You got them to your site. Then you have to convert them and convince then to buy. Does this sales pitch do it? It’s funny, it’s clever, it’s well produced, but will they buy it? We’re just asking. One downside to using humor, is that people don’t take your product seriously; you may not develop the trust necessary. Ultimately, there has to be a market for your product and those consumers have to be convinced — and trust — that your product is what they need (beer seems to be an exception). It’s one thing to get viral buzz; it’s another to convert.

A quick check of Alexa reports that “time on site (in minutes) peaked on Dec 21 at about four minutes. That doesn’t give much time to go through a shopping cart. Now “time on site” is down to two and a half minutes, which is roughly the length of the video.

Making Money with Porn iPhone Apps

November 30th, 2009

We’ve seen this before: porn is a launch-pad for making money with a new technology:

As reported on Huffington, a company called MIKandi has taken advantage of Apple’s ban on adult content on its iPhone app store and used it as an opportunity to build a profitable business:

As Phandroid notes, MiKandi is tapping into a potentially huge market opportunity:

“There is a reason that pornography leads the internet in traffic and revenue and with everybody going after the mobile web, it’s a wonder that some enterprising adult company didn’t pursue this earlier. ”

The Internet: A Rabbit Hole for Those Who Try to Control It

May 13th, 2009

As you may have heard, Craigslist is closing down its Erotic Services section, after a continuous attack by politicians and cops.  Ultimately, though, as many have noted, modern-day bureaucrats cannot control the internet or the oldest profession:

As PC World reports: “The notion that Craigslist and [its] officers should be held responsible for third-party content on their site because they didn’t do enough to satisfy the individual whims of respective state attorneys general is wholly inconsistent with the law,” says (Electronic Frontier Foundation) senior staff attorney Matt Zimmerman.”

The internet is, increasingly, a rabbit hole for those who want to control content, which is to say, the internet has already beat them.

A Website for Young Ladies and Sugar Daddies

April 13th, 2009

New York Times Magazine has a feature story about the dating site, SeekingArrangements.com, where young ladies can find sugar daddies and vice versa.

“The site now claims more than 300,000 registered members… Sugar “babies” outnumber daddies 10 to 1…providing what one sugar daddy called “the best fishing hole I ever fished in… About 30 percent of the arrangements on the site involve the daddy paying an “allowance,” usually a thousand or two a month, though the site claims some reach $10,000. The rest provide the baby with incidental cash, shopping sprees, gifts, travel or the fleeting illusion that theirs is a high-end, easy life. “I get flown to whatever city I want,” wrote a North Carolina college student…”

Twenty-two-year-old Mercedes says: “I could go out and work three jobs and still go to school and probably make decent grades, but is that really what I want to do? I make more money this way, and I have a lot more fun.” For the babies, it’s free to join; the “daddies” pay $44.95/month (plus an optional $5/month for discreet charges on the credit card statement). A sugar daddy can become a Diamond Club Member, where his income and net worth are verified, and his profile is featured on the home page. Full story here.

How to Blog Like Hugh Hefner, Or Build an Internet Business Like That

April 11th, 2009

One of us just finished the biography of Hugh Hefner, Mr Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream. The key take-way — that kept coming back again and again — is that, Hefner was not only the Editor and Publisher — he was also the demographic. In other words, he was putting together a magazine that HE would want to read. In MORE other words, he built a business that he was passionate about. And THAT is the key to success. Look at McDonald’s: Ray Kroc was not passionate about hamburgers; he was passionate about franchising, and one of his executives was passionate about real estate — the result: a $40 billion business.

What we’re saying is, you need to build a business around something you are passionate about. “Naked girls, sounds good!” Yes, grasshoppers, but look at the situation, Hefner saw the opportunity in 1953 — in a world of Esquire-type mags — for nudity, in a cool, sophisticated way. He wrote a whole Playboy philosophy about it. So what are you passionate about? Yes, it can be sexual, but what opportunity can you find today, in 2009? If you blog about your passion — or if you build an e-retail site about your passion — you are automatically WAY AHEAD of your competition, if they are just thinking of it as a way to make bucks. You will eventually make more bucks because you will attract those who have the same passion as you. You will have no problem blogging about your topic late at night, after work (or adding another product to your online store) because you like — love — doing it, just like your readers/customers love it.

Expertise — and eventual success — is simply, ultimately, the result of passion.

Sheriff Sues Craigslist Over Sex Ads (Updated)

March 6th, 2009

The sheriff of Cook County, IL says Craigslist is “a public nuisance” and wants a federal judge to shut down the “erotic services’ section. And he wants $100,000 to reimburse his department for investigating the website. The sheriff is not the first law enforcement official to go after Craigslist, which is often in the bullseye for its size (Craigslist is the #9 most popular website).

Brook Meeks, spokesperson for the Center for Democracy and Technology stated: “Craigslist is providing an interactive computer service, and as such is protected under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. This provision essentially says that a service like Craigslist can’t be treated as a publisher or speaker of any information put there by a user. So Craigslist isn’t responsible for the content that users put on its site. That said, Craigslist has worked with law enforcement and toughened up the procedures — requir(ing) (a)  name and valid credit card — for putting erotic ads online.” Here’s the full story.

UPDATE: WE RECEIVED A QUESTION ON THIS: “Where’s this county located?”

This is the county Chicago is located in.

“Do It Yourself: Amateur Porn Stars Make Bank”

March 1st, 2009

This is interesting: An ABC News story features Antoinette, a 25 years old interior designer from Baltimore, who makes an extra $500-600 a month, for about 20 minutes worth of “work.”  “I’m not a porn star. I don’t want to be a porn star,” she said. “I’m a pretty normal woman. I don’t wear makeup that often. I’m 5’6 and 140 pounds. I’d say I’m nice looking, sure, but otherwise I’m pretty average.”  She is making money by posting videos to a new section of the video-sharing site XTube.com.
