When you register a domain name, we highly recommend you add a domain privacy service to your order. If you don’t, and you register your domain as an individual, anyone can go into the WHOIS database and see your name and your contact info (like where you live). Probably the best-known privacy service is Domains by Proxy. When you subscribe to them, their contact info — not yours — shows up in the WHOIS, as the listed administrative and technical contact. Of course, such a service does not give you complete anonymity – i.e., you cannot hide from the law. Domains By Proxy is owned by Go Daddy CEO Bob Parsons, and when you order a domain name from Go Daddy, you can add the Domains by Proxy option for a minimal fee, depending on the options/deals you select. We use www.GoDaddy.com as our domain registrar. We consider this a fitting introduction to Rich Dog Millionaire.

“What’s in a Nonsense Name?” (Update)

What name should you give your company? In our grandfather’s day, you may have given it your last name — Ford, Disney, Wal-Mart (Sam Walton); or maybe you’d give it a solid basic name, like US Steel, American Airlines, General Electric. In our parents’ day, you tried to be a little unique: Apple, Target… Now, have you noticed… nonsense has been in for a while: Google, Twitter… Joel Schwartzberg, in his Huffington Post blog, writes about this phenomena. First there was ABC and CBS — now there’s Hulu. First there was Network Solutions — now there’s Go Daddy. There seems to be a couple of philosophies out there for internet business names: Compose your company name based on the most popular keywords in the market you are going after — clear but common; or go in the opposite direction and build a very unique brand name — from obscure to hopefully well-known one day.

UPDATE: So Wal-Mart and Target were founded the same year, in 1962 — so our little story above, that they were created in different generations, is a bit off. But whatever; you get the idea.

In the April 2009 issue of “Playboy” magazine, Go-Daddy founder Bob Parsons writes: “I started internet sensation Go Daddy. But it never would have happened if I hadn’t been ready to crash and burn.” Today, Go Daddy registers 45% of all domain names — over 33.5 million domains to date. They offer rock-bottom prices (we use them) and they rewrote the registry business. But in 2001, the company was burning through cash; Parsons was making plans to shut it down. Then an experience he had in Vietnam as a marine came back to him. In Vietnam, he had come to the conclusion that he was going to die there. This gave him a sense of calm. “When times get tough on you,” Parsons says, “you judge what your worst-case scenario is, assume it’s going to happen, and get back to work.” If Go Daddy, hadn’t worked out and Parsons lost everything, he figured it might be fun to go to Vegas and be a stickman on a craps table. That wouldn’t be so bad. Hell, you’d be alive.

Cybersquatting: From Dennis Rodman to Bob the Builder

On Sunday, the United Nations’ World Intellectual Property Organization “said it (had) received last year a record number of complaints on cybersquatting — or abusive registration of trademarks on the Internet” — where someone tries to grab a domain name of a business or person, for the purpose of selling it back or otherwise exploiting it. “Cases brought last year involved names ranging from basketball player Dennis Rodman, film star Scarlett Johansson to (the) popular toy Bob the Builder.”

In the near future, we’re going to discuss a related topic: capturing deleted or expired domain names — and the good, the bad, and the ugly of it.
