Adwords: Focusing on “Long-Tail Words”

“Smaller advertisers have a better shot of appearing on the crucial first page of search results, and there are big opportunities for all advertisers to attract attention by bidding on less popular, multi-words… (says) research firm AdGooroo. Read the full story at Internet Retailer magazine.

In other words, focus your campaign on the “longer-tail words” (i.e., “red australian shephard short hair dog” instead of just “dog” or “australian dog”). You may get far fewer impressions but your click-through-rate will be much, much higher. Well, of course, this is nothing new. Chris Anderson wrote a great book about it back in 2006, The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More. A good example of what this all means was explained in his book: A Borders bookstore carries about 100,000 titles; meanwhile at Amazon, 25% of Amazon’s total “sales come from outside its top 100,000 titles.” The 20th century was about hits and broadcasting; the 21st century is about nices and narrowcasting. This is, as most people know by now, the heart of e-commerce.

BTW here’s another fun fact about broadcasting versus narrowcasting: Today’s hit “CSI” is watched by 15% of TV households. Compare that to “I Love Lucy’s” 74%. Niche is the thing now.

Amazon Changes Affiliate Program; Will No Longer Pay Fee on Paid Search Traffic

Amazon has announced they will “no longer pay referral fees to Associates who send users to www.amazon.com, www.amazon.ca or www.endless.com through keyword bidding and other paid search on Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other search engines, and their extended search networks.” This will affect those affiliates who have carved out a business by simply buying keywords and sending the clicks directly to Amazon. This is not surprising. We don’t think Amazon was particularly thrilled with this angle. The affiliates here were basically competing against Amazon; by placing a keyword bid higher than Amazon, you got the traffic instead of Amazon. So their thinking undoubtedly was: Why should we pay you a fee for outbidding us? Loophole closed. For further info, you can go to Amazon here.

Email Alert: Google to Change Adwords; New Interface; Starter Edition Update

Google has sent out an email announcing changes to the Adwords interface “that will make it easier to manage your campaigns.” According to the email:

“Here are some of the key differences you’ll notice after the update:

- You won’t need to graduate to Standard Edition to expand your account. You’ll still have a simple view of your performance, but you’ll have access to advanced AdWords features if and when you want to use them.
- Instead of a monthly budget, you’ll see a daily budget for your account. We’re not changing the overall way your budget works, just the way it’s presented, so you won’t have to make any adjustments to keep your ads running as usual.
- A new Settings tab will help you make changes to basic settings, such as the audiences your ads reach.
- Your content network statistics will appear in a new Networks tab.
- Here’s a detailed list of differences between Starter Edition and the new interface”

Book Review: “Adwords for Dummies” by Howie Jacobson PhD (Update)

The great thing about the “For Dummies” series of books is that they really try to make things as easy and as understandable as possible — usually no complicated tech jargon (when you come across such stuff, they warn you with a “Technical Stuff” icon and mark it as “What You Don’t Have to Read.”) AdWords For Dummies (it’s got 5 full stars on Amazon; with 74 reviewers) starts off the best way possible — getting YOU started. Chapter 2 — after a quick Chapter 1 goes over the pay-per-click industry — is a step-by-step guide to “Setting Up Your Starter Edition Account” (on Google Adwords). In an afternoon — actually maybe an hour or so — you could stop thinking about it and actually be doing it, with an active Adwords campaign. Once you jump into the wading pool, you can then read on and become an expert swimmer. Jacobson and Google’s Starter Edition will take you in as gently as possible (TWSS).

If you are already using Adwords, this “For Dummies” book is a good overall textbook. No guru rhetoric; just some common sense how-to info that’s easy to read (some cartoons too), and it can then become a good desktop reference. Anyway, starting is the hardest part so just DO IT! Trust us, the COOLEST thing is turning on that Adwords campaign and going to bed, knowing all those little keyword sales guys (Jacobson’s metaphor) are working for you while you sleep. Yes, you may wake up with $0 sales the first day — but you have STARTED — which is more than what 90% of everybody else does!

UPDATE: FYI, One day after writing this review, Google announced changes to the Adwords interfact, as reported here.

SpyFu, – a site where you can “”Spy on your online competitors” — reports that the keyword with the highest cost per click is……………………

“DUI Phoenix Arizona” — with a high cost of $54.13

We’re not sure offhand why this is the case, or what the hell is going on in Phoenix. The next “DUI” keyword is ranked #9: “San Diego DUI Defense.” The #2 most-expensive word on the list is “loan consolidation student loans” at $53.88.

SpyFu is a great research site to keep in mind. By looking at statistics, you can often find the winning edge that you need.

Hey everyone: I’ve been asked to post about my experience with Clickbank and Commission Blueprint, although I don’t have a writer logon yet. They just wanted me to write this asap:

I have two internet stores and a blog, slowly building my income — but that did me no good under the circumstances a while back. My wife – and my bank account –said: “That’s all well-and-good baby, but we need money now.” The question was — and I know it’s a question many of you have –is: HOW DO I MAKE THE MOST MONEY I CAN NOW, QUICKLY, AT THIS MOMENT?” Here is the answer I found:

Statistically, the highest single-transaction-way to make money is to be an affiliate on Clickbank (or CJ, but I’ll write about that later). On Clickbank you can get $20.00 commission on a single order. Some products offer $30.00 or more PER TRANSACTION. So, bottomline, the fastest way to maximize income online is to be an expert with Clickbank. AND the winners are the ones who have the edge — the knowledge of how to implement the most-profitable campaigns.

I found the best source for this edge: Commission Blueprint, it’s hands down the best. I disagree with them about web page know-how – maybe later — there’s no time for that now. After you have learned the mastery of Commission Blueprint, you can go to places like ipowerweb to create the sites/pages that you need (easy stuff). Also if you need a tutorial on Adwords here’s the best book (a great Dummies book). But for now check out Commission Blueprint and get started! It’s the fastest way to fill your bank account. (They talk about how they made $109,151 in 30 days days off just one Clickbank product.)
