Adwords: Focusing on “Long-Tail Words”

“Smaller advertisers have a better shot of appearing on the crucial first page of search results, and there are big opportunities for all advertisers to attract attention by bidding on less popular, multi-words… (says) research firm AdGooroo. Read the full story at Internet Retailer magazine.

In other words, focus your campaign on the “longer-tail words” (i.e., “red australian shephard short hair dog” instead of just “dog” or “australian dog”). You may get far fewer impressions but your click-through-rate will be much, much higher. Well, of course, this is nothing new. Chris Anderson wrote a great book about it back in 2006, The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More. A good example of what this all means was explained in his book: A Borders bookstore carries about 100,000 titles; meanwhile at Amazon, 25% of Amazon’s total “sales come from outside its top 100,000 titles.” The 20th century was about hits and broadcasting; the 21st century is about nices and narrowcasting. This is, as most people know by now, the heart of e-commerce.

BTW here’s another fun fact about broadcasting versus narrowcasting: Today’s hit “CSI” is watched by 15% of TV households. Compare that to “I Love Lucy’s” 74%. Niche is the thing now.

Amazon Changes Affiliate Program; Will No Longer Pay Fee on Paid Search Traffic

Amazon has announced they will “no longer pay referral fees to Associates who send users to www.amazon.com, www.amazon.ca or www.endless.com through keyword bidding and other paid search on Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other search engines, and their extended search networks.” This will affect those affiliates who have carved out a business by simply buying keywords and sending the clicks directly to Amazon. This is not surprising. We don’t think Amazon was particularly thrilled with this angle. The affiliates here were basically competing against Amazon; by placing a keyword bid higher than Amazon, you got the traffic instead of Amazon. So their thinking undoubtedly was: Why should we pay you a fee for outbidding us? Loophole closed. For further info, you can go to Amazon here.

Email Alert: Google to Change Adwords; New Interface; Starter Edition Update

Google has sent out an email announcing changes to the Adwords interface “that will make it easier to manage your campaigns.” According to the email:

“Here are some of the key differences you’ll notice after the update:

- You won’t need to graduate to Standard Edition to expand your account. You’ll still have a simple view of your performance, but you’ll have access to advanced AdWords features if and when you want to use them.
- Instead of a monthly budget, you’ll see a daily budget for your account. We’re not changing the overall way your budget works, just the way it’s presented, so you won’t have to make any adjustments to keep your ads running as usual.
- A new Settings tab will help you make changes to basic settings, such as the audiences your ads reach.
- Your content network statistics will appear in a new Networks tab.
- Here’s a detailed list of differences between Starter Edition and the new interface”

Important Reminder: Prohibited Adword Campaigns

We know of a guy who found a product he absolutely KNEW would be a big seller, and all he had to do was use Adwords, he just KNEW it. He acquired the product, wrote a business plan, set up his company, and – then – he found out it was against Google’s policy to advertise the product. Important to keep this in mind. Check out Google’s Content Policy. Among the prohibited items: academic aids (i.e., test-taking services), aids to pass drug tests, fireworks, miracle cures, tobacco and cigarettes, traffic devices (i.e., radar jammers), and weapons. Some items have restrictions, such as prescription drugs, alcohol, and gambling (prohibited outside of Great Britian, Italy, France, and Spain.)
Are there ways around it? Sure, SEO for one (see this post). You could also try some other search engines or content advertising services that cater to specific categories, i.e. adult. But you’ll likely find many of the same prohibitions. As you can see, most of the restrictions have to do with existing laws and regulations, and you would have problems promoting such an item anywhere. Bottomline, plan your campaign all the way through before you dive in prematurely.

Here’s a nifty tool you can download for free: PPC Web Spy. When you activate the tool and do a Google search, it shows you the Adwords the advertisers are bidding on, including info on position, average cost per click, clicks per day, and cost per day. It also reveals the actual destination URL for each ad and identifies which advertisers are affiliates. You need the Firefox browser in order to download the tool. And if you like it — we do — you can upgrade to a Premium version.
